When: Meetings will be held at lunch. I will find a meeting time that would work for everybody, so I will send out a survey to determine what the best time would be.
Club Mandate: My time Kayaking, Windsurfing, and Paddleboarding has defined my summers since my childhood. There is a certain joy in being out on the open ocean that is unobtainable for most Vancouverite teenagers despite Vancouver’s wealth of great watersport areas. I wanted to share my positive experiences with my school community, so I decided to create a club to bring this opportunity to my school.
I wanted to create a club of individuals who could go on excursions together, build connections, and strengthen relationships. The club is recreational only, unlike more traditional, competitive sports clubs, like Badminton or Basketball. The club will focus on building interpersonal skills, watersport competency, and familiarity with the water.
Club activities will include excursions, club meetings (held during lunchtime), and fundraisers. The club meetings will mainly include demonstrations of typical watersports equipment, discussion about new developments in watersports news, and planning for excursions.
Prior experience and swimming proficiency will not be necessary, as long as the sport the members are taking part in is not Windsurfing. Ministry Approved PFDs (Personal Flotation Devices) will be provided.
This would be an ideal environment for the members to learn or improve kayaking, paddling, and windsurfing skills.
Events: For this year, I plan on booking at least two “excursions” at Jericho Beach. They will take place in May and June. There is an excellent company at Jericho Beach: Jericho Beach Kayak (JBK). I plan on "testing the waters" by booking only kayaking excursions this year, as I feel that kayaking is the easiest sport of the three the club focuses on. Also, each excursion will have professional kayaking instructors accompanying us. The instructors from JBK and teachers from DT would satisfy the VSB requirement for having a minimum instructor: pupil (1:15) ratio. There will be at least 2 qualified adult supervisors present at every time during each excursion.
